Why run clubs work (and how to find one that fits)

The science is clear and the vibes are unserious. A short field guide to joining your first group run.

A run club is three things at once: a weekly workout, a low-pressure friend group, and a reason to leave the apartment when you really don't want to. That's a good deal for zero cost.

Pick by pace, not by proximity

A club five minutes away at the wrong pace is worse than one 20 minutes away at yours. Ask about the slowest group, not the fastest — good clubs lead with their beginner pace.

Nobody got into running to race. We got into running to talk.

Show up three times

The first run is a blind date. The second is a second opinion. The third is when you know. Give every new club three Tuesdays before you decide.
